AJE May 2014 CoM Challenge Reveal ~ Sweet Flower Dreams

To me, it feels like May just began yesterday—but obviously not—since here we are at the end of it today! It's a happy day though, as it's been a wonderful month for me in many ways… and of course, one of those highlights is getting to see some new jewelry today created for the AJE CoM reveal!

Our hostess this month is Sue Kennedy of Sue Beads and she provided us with a choice of beautiful glass cabochons or sweet sets of chicklet beads (pictured above). I went for the beads and believe it or not, I chose the pink and red set! Shocking, I know. Having learned a lot about myself and pink in the Bead Soup Party, I felt ready for another pink challenge!

And so, here's what I made…

I knew immediately when I saw Sue's little chicklets that I wanted to make a bracelet and use them with one of my new sleepy bunnies (another excellent reason to go pink!).

The pink chicklet bead was the starting point for me—it's such a nice soft dusty pink and really set the mood for the whole bracelet. I wanted to keep with the feel and theme of softness, going a little shabby chic with a bit of vintage, and so I chose to go without any wire. You know how much I love to work with wire so that was a challenge in and of itself to find other ways to connect the bracelet together, but in the end I managed and I have to say I love the way it turned out! I've titled my new bracelet "Sweet Flower Dreams".

I used soft pink seed beads on hemp to make a button and loop clasp. From there I added two czech glass beads, knotting between each one.

The chicklets have a nice large hole and worked perfectly with some vintage lace, which I also knotted.

As you might already know, my mom has been making these lovely fabric covered bead cords (now available in my shop—I'm so very excited about that! :-) and so I snatched up another one for myself and tied it into my bracelet.

One of my biggest challenges of making this bracelet, was actually the red chicklet bead! I wanted so much to use all three beads in one design, but the brightness of the red nearly had me designing a second jewelry piece. Finally, with a little rearranging I decided to separate the chicklets, putting this one at the clasp—that kept the design softer around the bunny and then the pop of bright red seemed just right at the end of the fabric covered bead cord—or at lease it makes sense in my mind! I love a little element of surprise in my designs—the ones that (hopefully) make people wonder at why I did it that way—because, believe me, I scrutinize every single element of every design!

This is my third time working with Sue's beads (see what I made before here and here) and just as before, I'm so very happy with what they bring to my jewelry—if you've never had the joy of creating with Sue's beads you must go grab up a few for yourself in her shop here! Thank you all for stopping by to see my latest creation! And a big thank you to Sue for another fabulous challenge!

And of course, don't miss out on all the lovely new creations made with Sue's glass lovelies! Check them out here…

Glassy Goodness!

I'm the proud and very happy new owner of some spectacular lampwork beads!

This lovely earthy mix (plus a few fun ceramic spacers) is from MonasLampworkI won them in the January ABS challenge—surprises in bead form are some of the best, don't you think? Mona has so many lovely beads, it was a hard choice to pick a very favorite (I took a couple months to decide!), but these colors really are so me and I couldn't be more happy with them.

And these absolutely adorable chicklet beads are from SueBeads and are the AJE Component of the Month for May. Yes, you're seeing pink again (a mauve-y pink, bright red, and a deep purple-red)—already I know what I'm going to make with them!

Lampwork beads always amaze me—the colors, the depth, the sparkle—beautiful! I know so much talent is involved in the making of these tiny works of art.

Have a fabulous Monday!

AJE May Component of the Month Reveal ~ Springtime Breezes

Every month at the Art Jewelry Elements blog one of our members hosts an art jewelry component giveaway to challenge the members and a few lucky guests. This month was Sue Kennedy's turn and she created some super fun lampwork ruffle discs. This is my first time playing along in the challenge… I can't let you guys have all the fun without me!!

Here's the bead Sue sent me…
Gorgeous isn't it? Juicy orange with soft blue-green. My favorite color… with my not so favorite color… I love a challenge in bead form!

And here's what I made…
A bracelet, of course! I call it Springtime Breezes. The orange makes me think of the sunlight getting stronger and warmer in the spring, and also of all the springtime blooms, and the soft blue reminds me of the clear air and blue skies.

I started off by forming the ruffle disc "flower" and then I threaded it onto a base wire with four matching Czech crystals. Then I used 22 gauge wire for the free-form wrapping, working from both ends simultaneously to keep the beads evenly spaced.

Next I made the back, using micro fiber suede and seed beads. I folded the strands over the loop on the focal and wire-wrapped the ends to secure them.

Then I threaded the clasp onto two strands of the micro fiber suede and wire-wrapped them together again, leaving a short tassel. I added the wire wrapping to the ends to give them a little more weight so they'd hang nicely.

And there you have it! I hope you enjoyed following along in my creative process.

Be sure to check out what everyone else created!

Button Swap Reveal!

Hi all! And welcome to my reveal in the Button Swap Blog Hop! Thanks so much Cindy, for such a fun challenge! I had sooooo much fun swapping buttons with my awesome partner Sue Kennedy and a load of fun creating with the buttons she sent me. Thank you Sue, for my buttons!

Here are the buttons Sue sent me: a really neat fish one, a beautiful glass one (Sue made that one herself—I'm so lucky!), an incredibly adorable Scottie dog, and a lovely blue flower made by Lisa Peters. I used three out of these four buttons.

Come see what I made...

My first creation used the fish button—I call it "Sea Worn". I knew right away that this button was totally me and this design fell together so perfectly, I was shocked! I don't think I've ever had a design come together so quickly and without any kinks along the way.

The focal, or focals of this necklace are, of course, the fish button, with a ceramic bead from Gaea tied in the center, and two ceramic pendants from Birgitta Lejonklou.

From there I combined a mix of ceramic rounds (also from Gaea), large-hole ceramic rondelles (from Michael's—I love how the glaze mimics the look of shallow sea waters), chocolate pearls, carnelian discs, mother-of-pearl chips, and a few scattered brass beads and bead caps.

And for the closure, I used another of the large-hole ceramic rondelles and I made a small macrame loop.

The next piece I created uses the glass button Sue made for me. This one was a real challenge. You know me and blue—we don't always get along! And green—well, green is blue's best friend... and best friends stick together, so green doesn't always like me either. But I reeeally wanted to make something with this button... and I wanted to do it justice too. After a few retries here's what I came up with, and I have to say I'm super pleased with it!
I call it Magic in the Water. The colors of the glass remind me of glistening water and also of dragonfly wings. So pretty!

I've had these pretty faceted glass beads in my stash for quite some time and they were the first beads I thought of when I saw this button—and they match perfectly! The addition of fiber (yep, this is my first time using fiber in a design!) was my little work-around for a slight problem. You see, the button is clear glass... and that was my problem. Up against my skin it all turned sort of yellow looking (no, I don't have yellow skin! Skin just does those sorts of things!). So I needed something light colored behind it to bring out the colors. Fiber was the solution!

I took a long strip of blue chiffon fabric, frayed the edges, and then threaded it onto the wire behind the button, folding as I went.

And I did the same thing for the beads, but only on one end. I really love the ruffly, airy look it added. This bracelet is such a fun one to wear!

And for my third design, it was my little girl, Pepper that inspired me...
Here she is. She's 100% Rat Terrier and the sweetest little thing. She's a bit nervous and shy, she's spunky and playful, she's my fierce protector, and she's my bestest friend. She's not just my little dog, she's my terrier... and that says it all.

And so, when I got a little Scottie button from Sue that was super special. The button belonged to Sue's grandmother who was Scottish, and she loved Scotties. My mom's side of the family is from Scotland too, so that made it even more special. And here's what I made...
I call this bracelet "Terrier 'Tude". It's simple, but something I'll wear all the time. I wanted to use something red for the band and I searched for a while for a red cord to match the Scottie's collar, but couldn't find anything quite right. And then I remembered Pepper's old bed was plaid. I say "old" because that bed met its end a while back—first the washing machine had a fight with it and tore a small hole in it, and then Pepper decided it wasn't puffy enough for her and she tore it up to make it puffier... and so I had to buy her a new bed.

Plaid and Scotties go together perfectly! I used four strands of the fabric from Pepper's bed and made a braid for the band and stitched the little Scottie on in the middle. My second ever fiber design! I love it!

And here's how I did the closure—knots on each end wrapped with wire and a hook clasp.

I showed it to Pepper when I finished and I think she recognized it as her "old" bed, and she looked a little confused... she probably would have liked to make it puffier!! :-)

And there you have it—three designs with three fabulous buttons! The blue flower is next on my to-do list... Go see what Sue made with the buttons from me here!

Thanks so much for stopping by! Happy hopping!

Bead Table Wednesday ~ 5/9/12

My "bead table" today is my packaging and shipping table... I use it when my other table is TOO messy—which it happens to be at the moment—all covered in bead making stuff. And now, BOTH of my tables are very messy!
Actually, I find I work best when my table is a bit on the messy side. I think the creative juices flow much better when everything is within reach. Today was very productive—I designed and actually finished one of my button creations. I can't tell you what sort of creation it is yet, but I can tell you that I'm so excited with the way it turned out! And if you look closely at my table you'll be able to figure out which button I used. ;-) Three buttons remaining... I have good ideas for them too and I should be able to finish at least one more, but I'm not sure I'll get to them all.

And speaking of buttons... here's a peek at what I sent Sue:
I sent these off to her before I got the ones she had sent to me and imagine our surprise when we opened our packages and found we had both sent very similar things—buttons from our grandmothers, buttons we had made ourselves, and ceramic buttons! That's got to be the neatest thing ever and really makes this swap special!

Buttons From Sue

Cindy Wimmer of Sweet Bead Studio is hosting a Button Swap and Blog Hop. Button lovers from all over were paired up to swap 4 buttons, create something, and then on May 13th share their creations in a blog hop. I was paired up with Sue Kennedy of Sue Beads.

And here's what she sent me...

This little Scottie button belonged to Sue's Grandmother, who was Scottish and loved Scotties. I just love it! My little girl, Pepper is a terrier—a rat terrier and not a scottie, but they all have the same loving heart and that fearless/protector attitude—terriers stole my heart a long time ago.

This next button is one Sue made herself. Sue makes some fabulous glass and enamel beads and when I found out she was my swap partner, I was secretly hoping I'd get a button made by her... and I did! How super is that?!! And it's just gorgeous! She just started making buttons and I hope she keeps at it. Check out her shop here to see more of what she makes.

I want these...

And these! They're orange!! :-)

Okay, back to the buttons...
A very neat fish button... I think something nautical will come of this one...

And finally, a pretty ceramic flower button made by Lisa Peters. Don't you think that crackle finish is to-die-for? I love it! I have ideas for this one too.

Thanks so much Sue! I love all my buttons!!

So, what did Sue get from me?
This.
And that's all you get to see! I'll show you what's inside after Sue sees it first!

Time to get creating! Come back on May 13th for the reveal!
